Can a girl and a boy be just friends? The age-old question isn’t it?
But let me ask another here; can a boy and a girl stay friends if they’re secretly in love with each other?
Where Rainbows End is a magical tale of love, but more importantly, of friendship. We get to watch Rosie and Alex go from kids to teenagers to adults, navigating life and all that comes with it. And what makes this book oh-so-personal is its epistolary format. Yup, the entire book is a series of notes, letters and emails .
The author very cleverly tells the story through the simple prose of letters. It was my first book in this format and I must say, the first time I read it was the first time I fell in love with writing letters.
If you’re someone close to me, you’ll definitely have got a note, a letter or a long message over phone talking about your importance in my life. This book taught me words can mean so much when said the right way!
So, lets talk about Rosie and Alex — the quintessential childhood best friends. As all epic friendships go, they also started with a fight in kindergarten. But from there on, they were inseparable! When Rosie and Alex were together, they didn’t need or want anyone else! They were closest to each other, sharing everything — but then came the dreaded teenage years.
But no, Rosie and Alex were still close as ever. Until Alex has to suddenly move to a new city quite unexpectedly. Forced to spend their senior year apart, they promise to each other to keep in touch and write often.
And they do. Distance couldn’t break their friendship. But when Alex fails to come through on his promise to take Rosie to her senior prom, life changing consequences occur. And I mean that quite literally!
It takes a whole lot of time for our hero and heroine to recognize that what they feel for each other hasn't been platonic for a long time. But again, life throws curveballs at them. Forced to spend their life apart, but adamant to still stay in each other’s lives, they spend almost two decades hiding their love.
Where Rainbows End is not a teen romance. It’s a beautiful tale of hope, unconditional love and what awaits us if we only have the courage to go search for that miracle at the end of the rainbow!
I first came across this gem of a book when I was about 15 or so. Ever so often, I find myself going back and reading it again and every time it’s with new eyes. As a 23 year old (mostly) mature adult now, I can see the struggles of the characters even more deeply.
This one is a definite must-have in your TBR! Why don’t you read it and tell me how you liked it!!
